Main Sewer Line: 3 Things That Can Cause a Backup

by April Rivera

Is the water in your home not draining properly? If you have water backing up in your shower, sinks, and toilet, chances are you have a major clog in your main sewer line. This can be a significant problem that can leave you without a functioning home until it is repaired. It is crucial that you have this looked at. The following are just a few things that can cause your sewer main to become clogged:

Shifting Soil

One thing that can cause problems for your main sewer line is shifting soil. As time goes on, the soil will move and cause the clay and other matter to increase in volume. When the soil moves, so does everything that is near it. When the soil moves, so do your popes. This type of pipe is not flexible and not designed to move. This can lead to breaks that will be detrimental to your plumbing.

Buildup Inside Pipes

Another major problem can be buildup inside the pipes. This can happen when improper items and matter are flushed into them. You have to be extremely careful about what goes into the toilet. The only thing that should be flushed is toilet paper. Anything else, especially feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, or paper towels will back up your sewer main line.

When it comes to the sink, there are several things that should not be run down the drain. Food waste, even with a garbage disposal, should not be placed down the sink. That matter can accumulate and cause the pipe to become clogged. You should also avoid placing any type of oil or grease down the drain as well. When it cools, the oil and grease will solidify and prevent the pipe from functioning properly.

Another thing that can cause problems for your main sewer line is an invasive root from trees and shrubs. As the trees and shrubs grow, the roots will spread underground and eventually get near the pipes. The roots can puncture the pipe or crush them under the pressure of the weight of the roots.

Dealing with a damaged or clogged sewer main can be very inconvenient. If you notice backup of water in your home, you need to call the plumber as soon as possible. They will be able to use a camera snake through the pipe to locate the problem and repair it for you.
